Riverhouse Children’s Center is a thriving, mission-driven nonprofit dedicated to nurturing and educating children from six weeks to five years old. Serving up to 72 children across six classrooms, Riverhouse has been a trusted part of the Durango community for over 20 years.

This is a unique opportunity for a passionate and experienced leader to make a lasting impact during the most critical years of child development. As Executive Director, you will work closely with young children, dedicated teachers, engaged families, and an active Board of Directors to shape a warm, enriching, and high-quality early learning environment.

You will serve not only as an operational leader, but as a community builder, educational advocate, and champion for early childhood development—helping create a joyful, safe, and inspiring place where children, staff, and families thrive.

We are open to candidates interested in either a permanent position or a short-term engagement, including the possibility of a 3-month interim Executive Director role, with potential for extension or transition into a permanent position.

Position Overview

The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors and is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and strategic direction of the organization. This role ensures alignment with Riverhouse’s mission, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence across all aspects of the center.

Key Responsibilities

1. Organizational Leadership & Administration

  • Ensure compliance with Articles of Incorporation, Bylaws, and all regulatory requirements
  • Develop and implement administrative policies, procedures, and operational standards
  • Oversee daily operations in collaboration with the Board
  • Maintain organizational records, including financial, legal, and audit documentation
  • Manage facility operations, vendor contracts, and risk mitigation strategies
  • Lead annual goal setting and organizational planning
  • Ensure staff training, safety protocols, and licensing compliance

2. Staff Leadership & Culture

  • Recruit, hire, and retain high-quality teaching and administrative staff
  • Supervise and support the Assistant Director and Program Director
  • Oversee performance management, evaluations, and professional development
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and positive workplace culture
  • Communicate policies clearly and support staff through training and development

3. Program Oversight & Educational Excellence

  • Partner with the Program Director to ensure high-quality early childhood programming
  • Support teachers in delivering developmentally appropriate, engaging curriculum
  • Ensure compliance with childcare licensing and educational standards
  • Promote a nurturing, safe, and stimulating environment for all children

4. Financial Management

  • Collaborate with leadership and the Board to develop and manage the annual budget
  • Monitor financial performance, payroll, and reporting
  • Make strategic adjustments to meet financial and programmatic goals

5. Grant Writing & Fundraising

  • Lead grant strategy development aligned with organizational priorities
  • Research, write, and submit grant proposals to secure funding
  • Ensure compliance with grant requirements and reporting
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with funders and donors

6. Community Engagement & Public Relations

  • Serve as the primary representative to the community, partners, and stakeholders
  • Build relationships with families, local organizations, and government entities
  • Support events and initiatives that strengthen community engagement
  • Promote the mission and impact of Riverhouse Children’s Center

7. Board Relations & Strategic Planning

  • Partner with the Board to develop and execute strategic plans
  • Attend and present at Board meetings with regular operational updates
  • Support Board committee development and governance practices
  • Proactively communicate organizational risks and opportunities

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Business Administration, Nonprofit Management, or related field (Master’s preferred)
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in education (early childhood preferred)
  • At least 2 years of leadership or management experience
  • Strong financial management and budgeting skills
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal abilities
  • Ability to collaborate with staff, families, Board members, and community partners
  • Knowledge of childcare licensing and regulations
  • Commitment to the mission and values of Riverhouse

Preferred:

  • Experience with tools such as Google Workspace, QuickBooks, Microsoft Office Website or systems management experience

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: $75,000 – $82,000 (based on experience)
  • Benefits include:
